Learning to Learn

At North Durham Academy, our goal is for students to take charge of their own learning. We encourage them to work independently, recognise their strengths and weaknesses, and feel confident in their ability to improve while identifying their preferred learning methods. We aim to achieve this through teaching students to ‘learn to learn’.

We have utilised evidence-based research to create eight 'learning to learn' tasks. Each task serves as a method for revising the skills and knowledge covered in lessons, while also providing a way for students to recognise their strengths and weaknesses related to the topic. Each of the eight learning to learn tasks have video instructions linked below.

The Learning to Learn Book

Every student will receive three ‘Learning to Learn’ books over the academic year, one for each term. These books contain essential information tailored to support students with their academic and pastoral needs. Each week of our personal development program (tutor time) features a page overview, which includes our 'Big Question of the Week' and space for completing tutor tasks. Additionally, there are sections for students to log their attendance, behaviour points, and progress test scores. In KS3, the books also include reading materials for each DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) lesson, which students will engage in weekly using reciprocal reading strategies. It is important for students to bring their ‘Learning to Learn’ book to school every day to aid in their development.

Homework

Students will be assigned homework weekly for core subjects (English, Maths, and Science) and biweekly for all other subjects. Each subject features a dedicated section in the learning to learn book, which includes a lesson roadmap and knowledge organisers for the content covered during that term. The homework will take the from a learning to learn task related to the topic or skill students explored in their lessons that week. Students can utilise the knowledge organisers for assistance and watch the linked videos for guidance on completing the designated learning to learn tasks. Teachers will record homework assignments on Arbor, allowing parents to see when each task is assigned and its due date. Written feedback will not be provided for homework; instead, students are expected to review and correct their work in green pen using their knowledge organiser. Teachers will conduct a visual check and assign a grade in Arbor.
