Food Allergens and Food Standards

Legislation requires all caterers to highlight allergens within the food they server to all their customers.

Mellors Catering Services implemented an Allergen Matrix system to highlight all allergens within the food we serve. All Menu’s highlight the allergens at the service points, and all catering staff are trained on the government legislation.

Fourteen major allergens will be highlighted on the label within the ingredients list. They are:

  • cereals containing gluten
  • crustaceans, for example prawns, crabs, lobster and crayfish
  • eggs
  • fish
  • peanuts
  • soybeans
  • milk
  • nuts, such as almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, pecan nuts, Brazil nuts, pistachio,
  • cashew and macadamia (Queensland) nuts
  • celery (and celeriac)
  • mustard
  • sesame
  • sulphur dioxide, which is a preservative found in some dried fruit
  • lupin
  • molluscs, for example clams, mussels, whelks, oysters, snails and squid

Cashless Catering

North Durham Academy operates a biometric cashless catering system. This system speeds up the queuing process for your child, allows anonymity for students in receipt of free school meals and provides an opportunity for you to receive reports on your child’s food purchasing should you wish.  The system also supports the management of students with special dietary needs.

On your child’s first day they will be required to credit their account at our revaluation units, situated at student reception and outside the dining hall. The preference is for you to supply your child with a cash amount, and this will be logged on to the system.

It is up to you how much you will allow your child to spend and how often you wish them to credit their accounts, though our preference would be weekly. We would recommend £11 per week which allows £2.05 per day.

Children on free school meals will be automatically credited each day the price of a free school meal.  You may wish to also credit an additional amount to their account.

Please be assured that the fingerprint images cannot be used by any other source for identification purposes. The system uses an image of the fingerprint to create a mathematical algorithm and then discards the fingerprint; only the numbers remain and these cannot be reinterpreted back into a fingerprint image.

We will register your child on the transition days, so that they are ready to access meals on their first day.
