Hard work and determination pays off for students at North Durham Academy

Students at North Durham Academy have performed well across a wide range of GCSE subjects. Following the National changes to English and Mathematics examinations in 2017, this year, nearly half of all students attained good passes in both and this represents an improvement compared with the previous year. Specifically, 62% of students are walking away with a pass in English at Grade 4+ and 51% do so in Mathematics. There are a number of additional improvements across the range of subjects and these have been achieved against the biggest examination reforms in a generation. It goes without saying that the hard work of students and staff and the support from our parents have contributed to NDA’s continued improvements.

Behind these statistics are countless stories of success, sometimes against all the odds. Many students will be celebrating today having made enormous progress because of their hard work. The governors and staff are very proud of the resilience and hard work of this year group.

Among the students celebrating today were:

Joshua Allison, 16, achieved Grade 8’s and A/A*’s in 8 of the subjects he studied. This included English and Maths.  Joshua Plans plans to accept his offer of a place to study at Consett Academy Sixth Form.

Charlie Haggan, 16, achieved a Grade 7 or better in seven of the subjects he studied. This also included a grade 9 in maths, the highest grade available.  Charlie plans to accept his offer of a place to study at St. Bedes Sixth Form.

Chloe Walker, 16 from Stanley, achieved a Grade 7 or better in 6 of the subjects she studied.  Chloe plans to accept her offer of a place to study at Durham Sixth Form.

Dr Gary Ankers, Director of School and Curriculum, North Durham Academy commented:

“The students should be very proud of their efforts against the backdrop of significant turbulence around new GCSE’s. These new qualifications are undoubtedly more challenging than their predecessors were. In spite of this, there have been some exceptional achievements for individual students and I would like to congratulate them for their hard work and dedication to their studies. It is also important to acknowledge the contribution of our staff team who have worked diligently to prepare the students for the summer exams. Best wishes go to all of our Year 11 leavers for the next phase of their education.

North Durham Academy will be holding Year 6 Open Evening on Wednesday 19th September.  This showcase event offers parents and students the opportunity to meet key members of staff, and to see what opportunities North Durham Academy offers all students.
